And now let me tell you about Cortisol-

Today I am going to teach you something that is basic as caveman days. It is called the “fight or flight response”. This is an instinct put in us to respond to stress. We are to respond to stressful events with either the fight or  flight response – fight off the bad guy or run from the bad guy. What does this have to do with fitness you ask? Everything and let me tell you why!

In this day and time we have stressors all around us. We are confronted with so much stress that we now live in a world of “chronic stress”. And we are built to respond to stress by fighting or running (flighting). This is natural instinct. Both of those activities bring activity and rush to our bodies. But in our world it is highly unlikely that we are going to respond to our pain in the ass, stressing activity by either fighting it or running down the 8 flights of stairs to get away from him. No, we have to repress that stress. And when we repress that stress our bodies release a hormone called cortisol. One of the main functions of the catabolic hormone cortisol is to strip lean muscle to use for fuel in the body. Cortisol released without fighting or flighting can be very harmful. Cortisol connects with body fat and hangs out basically has a party with fat making it hard to lose body fat.

So, how do we remedy this? Exercise, and not just medium intensity aerobics like walking or even basic jogging, but what I call interval aerobic exercise. Funny thing, medium intensity exercise is just strenuous enough to increase cortisol. And we don’t want that. So we want to do more intense aerobic exercise. Interval training is a great way to do this. Every single person I train, no matter what their age or fitness level, I advocate interval training. Interval training is medium intensity aerobic activity mixed with intense bursts of aerobic activity – combining a mixture of both of these throughout an entire workout. A basic interval program is not pushing the interval button on the cardio equipment. No, this is not going to be intense enough for most of you. You must push yourself through an interval. So, the first basic interval program would look something like this. Warm up for 3-5 minutes, then go into one minute of very hard cardio, then 2 minutes of rest work something like your warm up, then another minute of the hard burst of cardio, then 2 minutes of rest work, continuing until you enter a cool down in the last 4-5 minutes of your exercise.

The first time you do this you may only be able to do one or two intervals because that is how hard you should be pushing yourself. When training clients I look at the SPM (strides per minute) or RPM (reps per minute) on the elliptical and bike or the speed on the treadmill. You should push yourself to where you working at least 35% harder during your intervals. Most clients at a normal fitness level do about 126 rpms on the elliptical at rest work then speed up to 165 to 180 rpms during their intervals. And if the SPMs or RPMs get too easy you need to increase the resistance to make it more difficult. Think of all the things that stress you out while doing those intervals and push yourself really hard. And during the rest work, relax and think of happy things. You see interval training is also psychological in more ways than one. On one hand the interval will help you burn up your stress. On the other hand you have the idea of rest work in the back of your mind. This should enable you to make it through that minute of hard work. Just push yourself!! Interval training not only helps get rid of cortisol it builds endurance, helps keep your heart healthy and so much more. It is the best, and to me the only, way to do your cardiovascular exercise. Of course you have to change up your intervals as your body adapts just to shock your body out of that plateau but such is life of the serious fitness enthusiast and that will be you if you make it to the first interval plateau.

  • Do NOT reduce your caloric intake too low. Eating a diet low in calories can trigger what is called “starvation mode” in your body. Your body is designed to protect you from starvation. During times of greatly reduced food availability, and when you eat too little, your body thinks it is starving. To compensate, your metabolism will slow down considerably. In this state your body will burn everything but your stored body fat. Eating too little poses other problems too, like nutritional deficiencies. The best way to evaluate a healthy weight loss program is by judging how your clothes fit as opposed to stepping on the scale.
  • Stay as active as possible. Being active means your metabolism is working faster than when you are sitting still. Vary your daily activity and exercise. This will prevent boredom and keep your body on it’s fat burning toes!
  • Don’t just sit there. If you are watching TV or sitting at your desk get up often and do some exercises. Walk briskly at all times. Keep your resistance band and dumb bells nearby and use them during commercials or during your breaks. Get your stability ball and sit on it at your desk or while watching TV and exercise your core right then and there. Believe it or not, even fidgeting can help.
  • Interval train. The harder you work the more calories you will burn both during and after exercise. Studies show that exercising as intensely as you can at least 10 minutes per day produces the best results. Interval training is an effective way to increase the intensity and duration of your workouts without running yourself into the ground or risking injury. Dr. Oz revealed a miracle appetite suppressant that will shrink your belly fat in no time — saffron extract. Here are five reasons why saffron extract, a natural weight loss aid, might work for you.

Saffron Extract Can Prevent Over-Eating

Saffron extract, a natural spice use for seasoning, fragrance, due and medicine for over three millennia, will “annihilate your urge to over-eat.” Though Dr. Oz had never heard of this miracle appetite suppressant before, he revealed how saffron extract prevents over-eating, which is (of course) related to weight gain. According to a study in Whole Foods Magazine, 100 percent of women who took the saffron extract supplement reported decreased hunger.

Saffron Extract Combats Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is a huge factor in weight gain for many people, triggered by chemicals in the brain. Proven Results

The studies involving saffron extract that Dr. Oz looked at allowed participants to eat whatever they wanted; and the results were clear. “They snack significantly less and they lost body weight even though they were allowed to eat whatever they want,” he said. “When I hear that, that’s a wakeup call for me.”

Dr. Oz and his team performed the study themselves with two volunteers who tried the saffron extract supplement over one weekend to see if it curbed their appetites. Both women were self-proclaimed emotional eaters.

One participant said, “I didn’t get that craving, or that urge.” The stress of the weekend did not cause her to eat more. The other participant said that when she gets hungry she will eat for whatever is around, from muffins to pies to chips. “Once I started taking these over the weekend, I did notice a decrease in the amount of hunger and the intensity of that hunger. I didn’t feel like I was going to snap if I didn’t have anything to eat,” she said.

The first participant lost three pounds in three days. The second participant lost five pounds in three days. “I’m speechless! I’m ecstatic!” said the second participant.

It Is Natural

Saffron extract is a natural supplement, made from the saffron crocus. The dried stigmas, threadlike parts of the flower, are used to make saffron spice. According to WebMD, saffron has been used to help alleviate a number of ailments aside from over-eating including: asthma, cough, sleep problems, hardening of the arteries, intestinal gas, depression and heartburn.  It has also been used as an aphrodisiac.

Other appetite suppressants are man-made. Phentermine is one sort of appetite-suppressant drug approved by the FDA as a short-term weight loss aid. However, according to WebMD, this drug should be taken for only a few weeks at a time, should not be taken with other appetite suppressants and poses the possibility of serious side effects and withdrawal reactions. Heart Rate Monitors are a must when doing cardiovascular exercise. It is imperative for your health to check your heart rate and keep an eye on it. What is your heart rate supposed to be? The calculation for maximum heart rate is as follows: bpm = beats per minute

220bpm – your age = maximum heart rate

Technically your heart rate should never get over this number. But if it gets close and/or over you should not just stop your exercise. You should slow down, take a couple of deep breaths amongst those shallow breaths. Your heart rate will come down. The key here is NOT TO STOP! You can have a serious condition if you just stop exercise at this time.

The company that made this for me went out of business this past summer. I went on the search for a similar product because I could not keep this product in stock! That is how I found Herbal Laxative. The main ingredient in Herbal Cleanse was Alexandrian Senna leaves 500 mg. Well Herbal Laxative has Alexandrian Senna 438 mg. This is the best you can find.
