Detachment, what is it and how to do it!

Detachment is an inner state of calmness and being uninvolved on the emotional and mental planes. It is definitely not indifference. People who are indifferent, do not care about anything, and are not active and initiative. On the other hand, people who possess emotional and mental detachment can be very active and caring, though they accept calmly whatever happens. Such people accept the good and the bad equally, because they enjoy inner balance and peace.

If they cannot do or change something, it does not disturb their peace of mind. If they are convinced of the importance of some action, they will pursue it whole-heartedly, and can ignore distractions easily. If they succeed with what they do, that is fine, and if they don’t, they will either try again or forget the matter and move to something else.

Count the number of times you got emotionally involved in something against your will and better judgment. How many times have you got angry, frustrated or disappointed? How many times have your moods swung high and low? Each time you tell yourself that next time you will stay cool and calm, and yet each time you forget what you said.

When it comes to personal affairs, it is hard to stay emotionally uninvolved. You get involved, and this is quite natural, otherwise life would have been boring. Involvement makes life ticking and active. However, it is advisable to develop at least some detachment, as this will help you in many situations.

Detachment is important in daily life, in the pursuit of ambitions and on the spiritual path. It is important to everyone, whether pursuing spirituality or material success. Every spiritual tradition speaks about detachment, but detachment cannot be confined only to spirituality.

Let me give you some examples of detachment. Suppose you meditate, but thoughts keep coming into your mind. You get emotionally involved with your thoughts, follow them and forget about your meditation and concentration. If you could express detachment, it would have been easier to ignore the disturbing thoughts. Detachment would have helped you to stay collected and concentrated.

What happens when somebody says to you something that you do not like? You will probably become angry, unhappy or insulted. Why is this so? Because you value other’s people words and opinions more than you value your own thoughts and opinions of yourself. You let other’s people thoughts, words and actions influence your happiness, actions and reactions. Your happiness and actions depend on them.

On the other hand, if you are able to stay detached, you will not be disturbed. You will stay calm. You will even be able to benefit from what they say. You will not waste hours thinking about their words.

Have you ever thought, how much time and energy are wasted every day, brooding on useless thoughts and feelings, due to lack of detachment? Much of the anger, frustration, unhappiness and disappointments are due to lack of detachment.

One of the ways to develop detachment is through meditation. In meditation, one endeavors not to follow the thoughts and feelings that arise. Meditating day after day, develops the habit of staying calm and emotionally detached, not only during meditation, but also in everyday life.

If you practice any kind of meditation, sooner or later, you will start to experience detachment. You will find that you feel and behave in a different way under circumstances that previously raised anger or agitation. You will find that you can handle your daily affairs of life in a calm and relaxed way.

Evil, What Evil?

28 Feb

Governing a large country is like frying a small fish You spoil it with too much poking Approach the Universe with the Tao and evil will have no power.
Not that evil is not powerful, but its power will not be used to harm others.
Not only will it not do harm to others but the sage himself will also be protected.
If only the ruler and his people would refrain from harming each other,
all the benefits of life would accumulate in the kingdom.
-Verse 60 of the Tao Te Ching

If you have no ill thoughts toward yourself or others the powers of wickedness and wrongdoing will be rendered impotent. It is divine law that you are protected and as long as you give evil nothing to oppose it will disappear.

Have you ever fried a fish and poked it so much that it just turned to mush? Well that is what Lao Tzu is trying to say here about governing a larger country. You spoil it with too much poking. And if we were to approach life with the same attitude evil would have no power.

A friend of mine told me a story that is very relevant to this. She said that one day her hair salon was broken into. When the robbers broke in they stole jewelry from the nail tech and then the robbers actually bagged up products of Lydia’s. They stole things of value from the nail tech but the robbers ended up leaving my friend’s stuff. It turned out that my friend was protected somehow. The robbers bagged up those items but did not take them.

Here is another great relevant story that I read in one of Dr. Joseph Murphy’s books. He said he had a conference with an ex-Sergeant of the Army, who had just returned from Vietnam. He told of a fascinating and absorbing episode which had occurred during his tour of duty there. One afternoon when he was on patrol with his men they walked right into six Viet Cong soldiers, who immediately killed all five men in his patrol before they could lift their rifles. Obviously, the Viet Cong had seen them coming and had ambushed them.

The enemy soldiers looked straight at him but never spoke or indicated they saw him. They went through the pockets of his men and took papers, weapons, and all contents. He was amazed and could not understand it. He found his way back to his battalion and later wrote about his experience to his mother in Kentucky. She wrote back: “They did not see you, son. They could not see you or touch you because I have prayed daily, ‘My son will always be invisible to the enemy. God is his refuge and fortress.’”

This man’s mother decreed constantly that her son would be invisible to the enemy and would be protected by God. According to Dr. Murphy this was communicated to her son’s subconscious mind, which responded according to the impression or decree given. Every letter she wrote her son concluded with these words taken from the 46th Psalm: “God shall help you, and that right early.”

Undoubtedly these letters and prayers written by his mother had a profound effect upon him and made a deep impression in his subconscious mind, which responded to her conviction of God’s protection for him.

He gave evil nothing to oppose and it disappeared, actually he disappeared!

Be strong in mind and spirit and you too will find evil disappearing from your life.

Resolve Problems Using the Subconscious Mind

05 Jun

Matthew 18:18-19 I promise you that God in heaven will allow whatever you allow on earth, but he will not allow you anything you don’t allow. I promise that when any two of you on earth agree about something you are praying for, my Father in heaven will do it for you.

An excerpt taken from The Power of the Subconscious Mind, Dr. Murphy says this scripture translates as the two meaning the conscious and subconscious minds. I like that!

I took this directly from the book.  The key is to draw your picture, keep your mind on the picture or what you really want as the solution and then let it go; as you will read in this excerpt by Dr. Joseph Murphy. This is powerful stuff. This is only 2 pages of 172 pages of GREAT MATERIAL. At the bottom of this post is a link to where you can purchase this book.

“The principle reasons for failure are: Lack of confidence and too much effort. Many people block their answers to their prayers by failing to fully comprehend the workings of their subconscious mind. When you know how your mind functions, you gain a measure of confidence. You must remember whenever your subconscious mind accepts an idea; it immediately begins to execute it. It uses all its mighty resources to that end and mobilizes all the mental and spiritual laws of your deeper mind. This law is true for good or bad ideas. Consequently, if you use it negatively, it brings trouble, failure, and confusion. When you use it constructively, it brings guidance, freedom, and peace of mind.

The right answer is inevitable when your thoughts are positive, constructive, and loving. From this it is perfectly obvious that the only thing you have to do in order to overcome failure is to get your subconscious mind to accept your idea or request by feeling its reality now, and the law of your mind will do the rest. Turn over your request with faith and confidence, and your subconscious will take over and answer for you.

You will always fail to get results by trying to use mental coercion – your subconscious mind does not respond to coercion, it responds to your faith or conscious mind acceptance. Your failure to get results may also arise from such statements as: “Things are getting worse.” “I will never get an answer.” “I see no way out.” “It is hopeless.” “I don’t know what to do.” “I’m all mixed up.” When you use such statements, you get no response or co-operation from your subconscious mind.

Like a soldier marking time, you neither go forward nor backward; in other words, you don’t get anywhere. If you get into a taxi and give half dozen different directions to the driver in five minutes, he would become hopelessly confused and probably would refuse to take you anywhere. It is the same when working with your subconscious mind. there must be a clear-cut idea in your mind. You must arrive at the definite decision that there is a way out, a solution to the vexing problem in sickness. Only the infinite intelligence within your subconscious knows the answer. When you come to that clear cut conclusion in your conscious mind, your mind is then made up, and according to your belief is it done unto you.

A wonderful way to get a response from your subconscious mind is through disciplined or scientific imagination. As previously pointed out your mind is the builder of the body and controls all its vital functions.

The Bible says, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. to believe is to accept something as true, or to live in the state of being it. As you sustain this mood, you shall experience the joy of the answered prayer!

3 steps to success in prayer:

  1. Take a look at the problem
  2. Turn to the solution or way out known only to the subconscious mind.
  3. Rest in a sense of deep conviction that it is done.
Do not weaken your prayer by saying, “I wish I might be healed.” “I hope so.” Your feeling about the work to be done is “the boss.” Harmony is yours. Know that health is yours. Become intelligent by becoming a vehicle for the infinity healing power of the subconscious mind. Pass on the idea of health to your subconscious mind to the point of conviction; then relax. Get yourself off your hands. Say to the condition and circumstance, “This too shall pass.” Through relaxation you impress your subconscious mind enabling the kinetic energy behind the idea to take over and bring it into concrete realization. “

Forgiveness Can Be So Easy

10 Mar

“Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it” -Mark Twain

While reading The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy I came across a prayer about forgiveness that is quite powerful: Quiet your mind, relax and let go. Then affirm: “I fully and freely forgive (mention the name of the offender) I release him spiritually and mentally. I completely forgive everything connected with the matter in question. I am free and he/she is free. It is a marvelous feeling. It is a day of general amnesty. I release anybody and everybody who has ever hurt me, and I wish for each and every one health, happiness, peace and the blessings of life. I do this freely, joyously, and lovingly. And whenever I think of the person or persons’ who hurt me I say, ‘I have released you and all the blessings of life are yours.’ I am free and they are free. It is wonderful!”

Guess what? You only have to pray this prayer of forgiveness once. Whenever the person, or the particular hurt happens to enter your mind, wish the deliquent well and say, “Peace be to you.” Do this as often as it enters your mind. You will find that after a few days the person or particular experience will return less and less often, until it fades into nothingness.

Dr. Murphy also mentions an acid test for forgiveness which I absolutely love. You can test whether or not you have truly forgiven someone. If you should hear something wonderful about the person you have forgiven and you sizzled at hearing the news then the seeds of hatred are still in your subconscious mind, playing havoc with you.

He gives the analogy of the memory of a tooth ache a year ago. You remember the pain but you do not feel it anymore? That is the test of true forgiveness. You may have memory of the hurt but you do not have the sting or hurt anymore.

This is the acid test of true forgiveness and you must meet it psychologically and spiritually or you will just be deceiving yourself and not practicing the true art of forgiveness.

Can your forgiveness stand this acid test? If not pray the prayer and practice the peace be with you thought process. It works, I know, I have put it to the test with ones who have taken away the most precious thing in the world to me. My involvement with my children’s childhood days & memories. I can forgive that and at this very moment wish the father of my children and the woman who worked the wrongs with him health, happiness, peace, and the blessings of life. And when I hear good things happening to them I am deeply happy for them.

I smell that oh so fragrent violet that Mark Twain was talking about can you?

News Adds Negative Vibrations

27 Jan

“Early in life I noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper” -George Orwell

“Cuz when they own the information they can bend it all they want.” -John Mayer song Waiting on the World to Change

In the Science of Getting Rich for Genuises you are asked to monitor how much news you watch during a week. In fact they challenge you you to avoid the news for a week. I can tell you in all honesty that was easy for me to do. I don’t watch the news and avoid it at all costs. What ticks me off about the news is I hear something very sad and negative and then I think to myself, “What can I do about that piece of information?” The answer is usually “Not a damn thing!” And then that negative piece of information just adds to my vibrational bubble. I don’t need that so out it goes! Trash!!

Just the other day I had a client in my studio talking on and on about the crisis in Haiti. Yes it is sad, yes I wish I could physically do something to help them, but there is only one thing I can do for them and that is pray. I don’t dwell on the issue because it won’t do any good anyhow. Besides, I don’t watch the news to avoid hearing about things I can do nothing about. And like George Orwell stated “no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper”. So who’s to say it is the truth?

Now I know there are some of you out there who freak at the thought of missing news. You may think that you are going to miss something or that you are going to become some uninformed citizen. But I promise you, as a non-news reading citizen myself, if you must know it you will know it.

For example, let’s talk about the weather for a minute. In Houston we had a major cold snap a few weeks ago. Most people knew about it a week to 10 days ahead of time. I don’t watch the news and I knew about it a week ahead of time too. The same client who talked on and on about Haiti, told me about the horrible cold weather headed our way and how we had better be prepared. Okay, so I was warned. God, the universe, or my higher power made sure I knew about what I needed to know about because I trusted in it.

So trust that you will know. Don’t waste your vibrational bubble listening to the news. Let’s put those negative folks out of business. Or better yet let’s start a positive news campaign. Hey, and just maybe that will put an end to the vicious circle in the first place. Now that’s an idea!!
